Yanely M.

In the baby picture I am six months old and we just arrived from Mexico. That’s one of the reasons why this picture is important; it’s one of the very first pictures I took here. The other picture is of my family and me on Christmas Eve in the year 1997. This picture is important because I’m on my first Christmas break from school. I was in kinder. My artifact is my baby tooth. I chose this artifact because I was born with this tooth. I was born with two and this is just one of them. I also brought it because they didn’t fall out by themselves; the dentist had to pull them out because they never loosened up. I thought that was something unique about me.

The picture is of my quinceñera party. It is part of my culture because for as long as I can remember, my quinceñera was something I always looked forward to. In Mexico and in other countries we celebrate it. We celebrate it because when a girl turns fifteen she officially becomes a young woman. On your quinceñera you have to go to church and then have a party afterward. I had a lot of fun that day. It’s one of the strongest memories I have and that I will treasure forever. My family is from Guerrero, Mexico and our plate is the pozole verde and we tend to eat it more than other food. I just very recently tried it though, and I just found out that it was our state’s special plate. It is very delicious and I suggest you try it.

One social issue that is important to me is the whole issue with immigration. I know that it is a very broad subject but I am interested in it. It’s something that is happening right now. People aren’t being treated equally and that is something that I really don’t like. Everyone is created equally and we should all be treated equally. Another issue that I am interested in is the issue about social injustices. A lot of bad stuff is happening around the world and a lot of people don’t know what’s going on. For example, people’s liberties are being taken away and they are being treated badly. I chose these issues because I really don’t like people being treated unfairly. It’s something I don’t like and I think I never will.

My favorite quotes are from Elie Wiesel and by Edna St. Vincent Millay. I really like Elie’s quote because after reading his book Night I really understood what he meant. He wrote about his experience during the Holocaust and well, the quote really explains itself and I support his quote.

I really like Edna’s quote because to me it is saying to never forget your childhood or the child in you, because your childhood is something that will never be forgotten even when you grow up. It sounded better when I first told it, but I forgot and I didn’t write it down so sorry, but it really did sound better before. I also like this quote because I really enjoyed my childhood and I will always remember the good old days.

EAR-LISTEN

Elie Wiesel’s Quote: “And that is why I swore never to be silent whenever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere.”

Edna’s Quote: “Childhood is not from birth to a certain age and at a certain age the child is grown, and puts away childish things. Childhood is the Kingdom where nobody dies.”

FEET-PLACES

One of the very few places I’ve been to is Catalina Island. I went there because my swim team invited me to go. We went there to scuba dive. It was a really great experience for me since I’ve never done that and it was really fun. I think I went in spring 2005; I was twelve, I remember that. I also thought that not a lot of people have been to Catalina Island to go scuba diving. I would like to go to Europe because both World Wars started there and I think that it’s a historic continent. I want to see different and new places, and it’s across the world.

I don’t have a favorite book but I do have my favorite series of books. It’s called the Twilight saga. The books are Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn. I love these books because it’s a very intense love story (sort of forbidden love), it gets really complicated, I can relate to the main character (I feel the way she feels, it gets to me), and I just love the whole plot! She falls in love with a vampire (there’s more to it than that, though). When he leaves for her own good, she meets her best friend who is a werewolf and he falls in love with her but she still loves the vampire. Then the vampire comes back and she takes him back though she broke her best friend’s heart but by then she loves the werewolf, too (by the way she always has near death experiences and one of them causes a big problem: she has to either turn into a vampire or die). Well, I can’t tell the ending because not everyone has read the book yet and well, maybe people will start reading the books. See what I mean about the plot?! Pretty intense, which makes it awesome!! My favorite movie is Titanic because it’s a true love story and it’s sad. That movie makes me cry every time I watch it, but I still love it! I also like it because I love love stories and because Leonardo DiCaprio comes out in it.

HEART-PASSION

Something that I really enjoy doing is playing music. I don’t know if I’m good at it but I enjoy playing anyway. I have an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar, two violins, a recorder, and I just very recently got a piano. I don’t really play the guitars a lot though. I play the violin more, but I really am interested in the piano most of all. Since I just got it, I really don’t know how to play it, but I am learning. I’ve always liked and wanted a piano. I think it sort of soothes me and I like it. It sort of also runs in my blood because a lot of my dad’s cousins play a lot of instruments and when I play I usually remember a song and try to play it out.
