Writing to Make a Difference
How can youth participate in a legislative process that does not give them the privilege of voting? Through youTHink’s “Writing to Make a Difference” activity, hundreds of youth are casting their “votes” on the issues that are affecting them most through postcard-writing to their legislators. This 1.5-hour activity provides youth with a vehicle for expressing their opinions through the exploration of pending state and federal legislation. Students have written to their representatives about important youth-oriented issues, including racial school mascots, violence in video games, bilingual services in state agencies, protecting national wildlife areas, and gun control.
This activity is especially appropriate for students in grades 8 to 12, and encourages persuasive writing, problem-solving, and critical research skills.
